Applying for a Burning Permit:

  1. Burning within the Village of Belcarra is restricted to two (2) one-week periods during the year, namely, April 23th – 30th, and October 24th – 31st, and in all instances a burning permit is required.

Note 1: The Fall 2008 and Spring 2009 burning periods have been reduced from 16 days to 8 days for properties with vehicle access for Class B1 Permits (yard waste).
Note 2: As of May 1st, 2009, Burning Permits will only be issued to those properties that do not have vehicle access.

  2. Read the below Terms & Conditions and ensure that you understand them.

  3. Complete the below on-line application form (also available as a regular paper application form at the Village Office) to initiate preparation of the official Burning Permit, ensuring that you provide all required information, and submit the application form to the municipality. Note: Submission of the electronic on-line application form is the same as signing the application.

  4. The municipality will prepare the Burning Permit and arrange for pick-up by the applicant. The requisite $15.00 permit application fee can be either paid during regular office hours, dropped-off in the office mail slot, or a cheque can be mailed to the Village Office. The Permit Fee must be received by the Village Office prior to the burning dates specified in order for the Burning Permit to be valid.

  5. If you have any questions about the application process, the Burning Permit itself, or the below Terms & Conditions contact Erin Boyes at 604-937-4100 or visit the Village Office at: 4084 Bedwell Bay Road, Belcarra, BC, V3H 4P8.

Terms & Conditions:

  • These terms and conditions apply to all Burning Permits within the municipality.

  • The official Burning Permit, signed by an authorized agent of the municipality or SVFD, must be readily available on-site during all fires.

  • Burning Permits are only valid for three (3) days, and burning can only occur on the dates shown on the permit.

  • The Ventillation Index (VI) must be checked each day prior to burning so that smoke from the fire doesn't add to local air pollution. The VI is a measure of the atmosphere's ability to disperse smoke, but is only one factor to be considered when deciding on burning. Call Metro Vancouver's 24-hour message line at 604-436-6777. For more information see the Metro Vancouver website.

  • All Burning Permits and fires within the municipality are subject to the provisions and requirements of the Belcarra Fire Prevention Bylaw (No.310, 2000). Any person applying for a Burning Permit should familiarize themselve with this bylaw.

  • An adult must be present on-site for all fires.

  • Only one fire site is authorized unless otherwise approved by the SVFD.

  • Fires are limited as to size, and must be kept under one metre (3 feet) in height, unless otherwise approved by the SVFD.

  • No burning of tires, petroleum products, plastics, or hazardous materials.

  • No burning during windy conditions that may cause sparks or burning brands to travel onto adjacent properties or onto combustible materials.

  • No burning within the distance specified by the Burning Permit of any combustibles or property lines. (Site and fire risk specific – consult the official Burning Permit.)

  • All fires are to be located on the owner’s property. No burning on Public Lands is permitted unless approved by the municipal Council.

  • A Burning Permit may be cancelled for failure to comply with either these terms and conditions, or any additional terms and conditions noted on the Burning Permit.
