Mayor's Report - September 2001

Mayor Ralph Drew

Last March I wrote about the importance of protecting Belcarra’s water supplies, and how Council was investigating options for treatment of the Village Hall water supply that comes from an on-site deep-drilled well. To recap, the Simon Fraser Health Unit routinely tests the water at the Village Hall and, in the fall of 2000, test samples began to show increased levels for total coliform bacteria that necessitated a “boil water” directive. Although the total coliform levels were very low, and negative for E. coli, precautions were nonetheless deemed appropriate given that the Village Hall is a public facility. Council had a technical specialist (Coast Mountain Earth Sciences) assess the situation, and obtained advice regarding water treatment options suitable for the Village Hall.

Most interesting is the fact that the weekly water samples subsequently sent to Simon Fraser Health Unit have tested “negative” for the past six months. The theories as to why “positive” results appeared in the first place range from seismic activity in the Indian Arm area to outright contamination of the Belcarra aquifer. The report from Coast Mountain Earth Sciences could not definitively determine a cause for the higher levels of total coliforms but provided some probable causes. The most plausible theory is that some sort of insect got into well via the air vent, drowned and thereby introduced coliform bacteria that required time to purge.

The consultants report identified several water treatment systems and included quotations from various suppliers. Of the three acceptable and suitable systems presented for consideration, the system from Enviro-Main Filter (low quote at $1420) was recommended for installation and subsequently endorsed by Council. The system purchased utilizes filtration and UV Sterilization.

The numerous events throughout Canada high-lighted in the media over the past year are a wake-up call to all Belcarra residents that we must continue to be vigilant in protecting our individual and community water supplies!
