Designation of the Bedwell Bay 'Habitat Protection Zone'
Designation of the Habitat Protection Zone in Bedwell Bay will soon be a reality now that the Village has made application to Port Metro Vancouver to install information signs and buoys to identify the sensitive eelgrass habitat at the head of the bay. The Village is pursuing this initiative in partnership with Port Metro Vancouver, the Metro Vancouver Parks Department, and the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans. One of the environmental protection initiatives proposed within the Bedwell Bay Sustainability Plan was the establishment of a Habitat Protection Zone (HPZ) at the head of Bedwell Bay to educate visiting boaters about the potential damage to eelgrass beds caused by boat anchors. The intent is to protect the sensitive eelgrass beds by encouraging boaters to anchor in the deeper waters located north of the HPZ. A key objective for the development of the Bedwell Bay Sustainability Plan was to demonstrate that Bedwell Bay could accommodate activities such as residential docks and recreational boating without sacrificing important environmental values. In this regard, the Bedwell Bay Sustainability Plan is showing other waterfront communities how it can be done! RALPH DREW |
